Do you download a lot of programs from the Web? Then you should check out our roundup of the Web's best free FTP programs below.
"FTP" stands for File Transfer Protocol. Simply put, it is a way to copy files to and from FTP servers elsewhere on a network. And it's the most common method for downloading files onto your computer.
Some people do all their downloading through their Web browsers. Indeed, for casual downloaders, your browser may be all the software you need.
But if you download a lot of files, you should check out one of the FTP programs we list below. They provide a much superior method for downloading software. They provide many handy features that can make your downloading time much more efficient. For example, some of these programs let you "tag" various files that you'd like to download while you're surfing. After you've finished a surfing session, they'll automatically go out and retrieve the files for you and then shut down your connection. Other programs will automatically reconnect and resume a failed download for you. (There are few things more annoying than losing your connection after you've downloaded 19 megabytes of a 20 meg file!)

FTP Clients

|
If you've ever watched an e-mail application choke on a 4MB attachment, you know that sometimes you need an alternative to directly sending or receiving files. And if you've ever e-mailed a crucial file that never arrived at its destination, you'll want a way to transfer files and make sure your recipient received them.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is tailor-made for quickly moving large digital files between a remote computer acting as an FTP server and an FTP client that lets you access and upload those files. And there are now several excellent FTP clients for Mac OS X.
We evaluated seven FTP clients available for OS X: Fetch Softworks' Fetch 4.0.3, On-Core's SimpleFTP 2.01, Panic's Transmit 2.5, RBrowser's self-titled RBrowser 3.1.2, Stairways Software's Interarchy 6.2, Vicomsoft's FTP Client 4.0.1, and Xnet Communications' CaptainFTP 2.6. We also considered how these programs stack up against OS X's Finder, which you can also use to connect to FTP servers. If you want to download files from an OS X–based server, the Finder may be all you need, but it won't let you upload files. All seven programs performed solidly, but two programs with advanced features and intuitive use came out on top: Transmit and FTP Client.

We've already stated that ftp has two parts: the client and the server. We've got an ftp server running on ftp.nwe.ufl.edu. Now you need to pick and install a client, and you'll be ready to start.
Generally speaking, one choice stands out for each platform. Select one of those choices to see help for that program. The programs we mention here should be on the UF CD.

Although it is possible to download files from public FTP servers simply with your web browser you often achieve better results with specialized FTP clients. For example a good FTP client is able to resume an interrupted FTP download or even manages to connect to an anonymous FTP site where a web browser fails. Here are some pointers to software directories which lists FTP programs for some common operating systems.
